Established in 1960, Huaqiao University (HQU) is one of China's renowned institutions of higher education. With its two campuses strategically located in two famous hometowns of overseas Chinese, Xiamen and Quanzhou in Fujian province, HQU is a national key comprehensive university directly affiliated to the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China. Dedicated to recruiting students from abroad, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, the university aims to serve the overseas Chinese and spread Chinese culture as well as develop students with both Chinese and foreign cultures in both virtues and professionalism. Nearly 200,000 students of all levels have graduated from HQU since its establishment, among which around 50,000 currently live in overseas areas, mainly distributed in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and countries and regions along the Maritime Silk Road. Currently, HQU has more than 30,000 enrolled students, including more than 5,000 students from abroad, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It has become one of the universities with the largest number of overseas Chinese students in China.
I. Introduction
The Tan Kah Kee Scholarships have been set up by The Xiamen Tan Kah Kee Education Foundation as part of its efforts to raise the spirit in the reply by General Secretary Xi Jinping to the Jimei Alumni Association, to promote the legacy of Mr. Tan Kah Kee, "the standard-bearer of overseas Chinese and the glory of the nation", to foster the Tan Kah Kee spirit in entrepreneurship and dedication to education, and to encourage outstanding international students of Chinese descent to study in Xiamen.
The scholarships are funded by the Jimei Schools Committee from the dividend yield of Hong Kong Chiyu Bank, and open to outstanding international students of Chinese descent from countries along the Maritime Silk Road and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who are descendants of Jimei alumni to study in Xiamen.
II. Eligibility
2.1 Applicants should be international students of Chinese descent with valid foreign passports, particularly those from countries along the routes of the Maritime Silk Road. Applicants should also adhere to the "One China" Principle, and be friendly to their mother country and in good health.
Students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan should be descendants of Jimei alumni, uphold the "One Country, Two Systems" policy, and be in good health.
2.2 Applicants should comply with the laws and regulations of the Chinese government and meet the admission requirements of HQU.
2.3 Educational background and age limits:
2.3.1 Applicants for bachelor's programs should have a high school diploma or above and be under the age of 30;
2.3.2 Applicants for master's programs should have a bachelor's degree or above and be under the age of 35;
2.3.3 Applicants for doctoral programs should have a master's degree or above and be under the age of 40;
2.3.4 Applicants for non-degree programs (including Chinese language program) and short-term programs are required to have a high school diploma or above and be under the age of 40.
2.4 Applicants who have received any other scholarship are not eligible for Tan Kah Kee Scholarships.
2.5 Applicants' Chinese proficiency requirements
Applicants for Chinese-medium programs should, in principle, pass HSK Level 5 or above (except for graduates from Malaysia Chinese Independent Schools). Chinese proficiency is not required for applicants for English-medium programs, Chinese language program and non-degree programs.
2.6 Before enrollment, foreign applicants are required to pass physical examinations for the items listed in the Physical Examination Record for Foreigners.
III. Application Time
Applications are accepted annually.

IV. Application Procedure
Applicants are eligible for scholarship assessment only after they are admitted to a certain program at Huaqiao University.
4.1 Programs for Application
Applicants should only choose the programs available at the Xiamen Campus of Huaqiao University (including College of Chinese Language and Culture).

4.2 Application Materials

4.2.2 Scholarship application materials (in duplicate)
(1) Application Form for Tan Kah Kee Scholarships.
(2) Photocopies of passport or other identification documents.
(3) Notarized highest degree certificates and transcripts in Chinese or English; certificates and transcripts in languages other than Chinese and English should be submitted with notarized translation in Chinese.
(4) Chinese proficiency HSK certificate or English proficiency certificate (except for graduates from Malaysia Chinese Independent Schools). Chinese proficiency is not required for applicants for English-medium programs, Chinese language program and non-degree programs.
(5) One copy of appraisal or letter of recommendation from graduation schools; applicants for master’s or doctoral degrees should provide two letters of recommendation from professors or associate professors written in Chinese or English.
(6) Certification of applicant's Chinese origin (important)
Foreign applicants: One certification letter provided by a Chinese community or an influential Chinese of foreign nationality from the applicant’s country of residence;
Applicants from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan: According to relevant regulations of Tan Kah Kee Scholarships, only those who are descendants of Jimei alumni are eligible for application. One certification letter from Jimei Alumni Association of the applicant’s residential area or from Xiamen General Association of Jimei Alumni should be provided.
(7) Study plan in China: Applicants for a diploma should provide a study plan of no less than 800 words.
4.3 Identification documents
4.3.1 Applicants from Hong Kong or Macao: Hong Kong or Macao Permanent or Non-Permanent Resident ID Card and Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents.
4.3.2 Applicants from Taiwan: Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents.
4.3.3 Foreign students: non-Chinese nationals with a valid passport of their own countries.
An complete set of application materials including admission materials, scholarship application materials, identification documents and physical examination records should be mailed and delivered to Huaqiao University before May 15th, 2018. Applicants are required to mail all the materials as required to relevant departments according to the programs they apply for, and send all the scanned copies to the corresponding email addresses. Please note that:
Applicants for undergraduate programs should mail the materials to the Admissions Office, Huaqiao University;
Applicants for graduate programs should mail the materials to the Graduate School of Huaqiao University;
Applicants for Chinese language undergraduate programs and non-degree Chinese language programs should mail the materials to College of Chinese Language and Culture, Huaqiao University.

V. Funding Standards
The scholarships received, varying with academic levels and categories, can be used for tuition, accommodation, course materials, insurance, living expenses, etc. In principle, the granting of scholarship shall not exceed the duration of program with regard to relevant academic level and category.
Specific standards are as follows (CNY):
5.1 Doctoral students: 70,000 per person per academic year (3 or 4 years);
5.2 Master students: 60,000 per person per academic year (3 years);
5.3 Undergraduate students: 50,000 per person per academic year (4 or 5 years);
5.4 Non-degree students (including language students): 30,000 per person per academic year (1 year);
5.5 Short-term students: 3,000 per person per month (subject to the duration of study).
VI. Selection and Annual Examination
The selection of scholarship candidates will be conducted on the principle of openness, fairness, impartiality and merit by comprehensively assessing the applicants' academic performance, language proficiency, research achievements, supervisors' comment, letters of recommendation and overall merits. The university will submit a list of scholarship candidates to the Tan Kah Kee Scholarships Committee for final approval.
The recipients' academic performance will be subject to annual examination under the Measures for the Management and Implementation of Tan Kah Kee Scholarships at Huaqiao University (Provisional). Only those achieving the required standard will have their scholarship renewed for the following year.
VII. Huaqiao University will conduct preliminary examination of the application materials before submitting a list of eligible candidates to the Tan Kah Kee Scholarships Committee for final approval.
VIII. Admission and Enrollment
Applicants who are accepted by the university will receive Huaqiao University Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for International Students in both Chinese and English versions, with which they are to apply for the Student Visa from Chinese embassies and consulates. Freshmen then should register according to the prescribed time of enrollment, but not ahead of time. Unreported late enrollment for more than two weeks will lead to disqualification for enrollment and must return the Visa Application Form for International Students provided by the university. After registration, the freshmen who pass physical examinations organized by the university will be formally enrolled.
